"Gel extensions" and "gel polish" are often used as if they were the same thing, but they're two different treatments, designed for different needs. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right one based on the condition of your nails and the result you're after.

What gel polish is

It's a coloured polish applied to the natural nail in several thin layers and cured under a UV or LED lamp. It doesn't add structure or length: it simply colours and protects the nail with a glossy finish that lasts 2-3 weeks on average without chipping.

What gel extensions are

Gel is a building material: it's used to strengthen weak or thin nails, correct their shape, or extend them with a tip or form. Unlike gel polish, it adds real thickness and strength to the nail, making it the right choice when the goal isn't just colour but also structure.

The main differences

  • Purpose: gel polish adds colour, gel extensions build and reinforce.
  • Duration: gel polish lasts 2-3 weeks, gel extensions can last 3-4 weeks with a regrowth touch-up.
  • Removal: both need to be removed at the salon; gel extensions require more care to avoid damaging the natural nail underneath.
  • Best for: gel polish suits nails that are already healthy and at the length you want; gel extensions are ideal for weak, short nails or nails you want to lengthen.

Which one to choose

If your nails are already strong and at the length you like, and you're just after a long-lasting, glossy colour, gel polish is the simplest and most natural choice. If your nails break easily, are very short, or you want a precise shape and length, gel extensions offer the structure that gel polish alone can't provide.

The two techniques aren't mutually exclusive, either: it's common to apply gel polish colour over a gel extension base, getting both structural strength and a coloured finish.
