Permanent make-up: what to know before eyebrows, eyeliner and lips

Permanent make-up promises to save time in your daily beauty routine, but before you book it's worth knowing exactly how it works, what to expect during and after the session, and how long it lasts over time.

What it actually is

Unlike a traditional tattoo, permanent make-up deposits pigment in the more superficial layers of the skin, not deep down. That's why the colour gradually fades over time instead of staying fixed forever, and why it's called "semi-permanent" rather than permanent.

The most requested treatments

Eyebrows

Hair-stroke or shaded techniques redraw the natural shape of the eyebrow, filling in gaps and defining the arch without the "drawn-on" effect typical of poorly done make-up.

Eyeliner

A thin line along the lash line that adds intensity to your gaze, designed to stay defined even after a swim or an intense day.

Lips

Defines the contour and can even out the natural colour of the lips, with an effect ranging from very natural to more pigmented depending on your preference.

What to expect on treatment day

The session always starts with a consultation to define the shape and tone best suited to your face and complexion. A local anaesthetic is applied before starting to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. Session length varies depending on the area treated, generally between one and two hours.

The healing process in the following days

Slight swelling or redness in the treated area is normal in the first few days, and the colour looks more intense than it will once healed: in the first week it typically lightens progressively as the skin regenerates. During this phase it's important to avoid direct sun, pools, saunas and make-up on the area, following the aftercare instructions given at the salon.

How long it lasts and when to touch it up

On average, permanent make-up lasts 12 to 18 months, but the time varies a lot from person to person depending on skin type, sun exposure and skincare routine. A touch-up a few weeks after the first session is often recommended to perfect the result.
